SERVICE IN A MYSTERY?!

But how will they know that I serve?

SERVEsome people don’t like this word very much. Being a servant is humiliating… Let’s find out the meaning of these words first. The dictionary of the Latvian language says: serve – actively work (for the good), work (for some purpose), servant – a person who fulfills someone’s will, acts in the interests of a person. Yes, there is also a salary.

Do the will of God and act in His interests! What an honor!

In the Bible we read: „Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” Colossians 3:23-24 NIV

The name of God indicates that there is no need to brag if someone was helped, comforted, supported… This should happen naturally, as if it were written in your genes. Caring for others would be your natural response…

But our human nature is lazy to serve. Even less do we want to serve in secret. To be honest, we all want honor and recognition. More than once I caught myself wanting to say (and sometimes say): “Did I do it well?” And I want to receive an affirmative answer, praise for my ministry. But the more I understand the Holy Scriptures, the less often I have this desire.

For: „And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.Colossians 3:17 NIV

I understand more and more that taking care of others is doing the will of God. It is an honor to be here on earth at the hands and feet of Jesus! It is a great honor to be the voice of Jesus to carry His story to the “poor”. But poor are all those who do not have Jesus!

BUT POOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE NO JESUS!

We all want to do important things, to perform significant ministries. But constant service in small things is more expensive than big accomplishments and one-time events. Serving small things all the time is hard all the time. It should be as natural as breathing. True service brings joy and becomes a way of life. We do not even suspect that service – a very important service – is the ability to listen to another, the ability to utter words of encouragement, to smile affectionately or sincerely kindly look at others, to sympathize with others in grief and comfort … May my and your service be in secret, because that the Heavenly Father sees it.

„But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”Matthew 6:3-4 NIV

And it is also important to know that by asking for help, we are giving someone the opportunity to do work of service. Even more – we give the opportunity to accomplish work in love!
